What is PICSI?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

PICSI (Phys\u00adi\u00ado\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal Intra\u00adcy\u00adto\u00adplas\u00admic Sperm Injec\u00adtion) is an addi\u00adtion\u00adal method of sperm selec\u00adtion as part of ICSI<\/a>. While in con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal ICSI sperm are select\u00aded pri\u00admar\u00adi\u00adly based on motil\u00adi\u00adty and appear\u00adance (mor\u00adphol\u00ado\u00adgy), PICSI also takes into account their abil\u00adi\u00adty to bind to hyaluron\u00adic acid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hyaluron\u00adic acid is a nat\u00adur\u00adal com\u00adpo\u00adnent of the envi\u00adron\u00adment sur\u00adround\u00ading the egg cell. A sperm cell\u2019s abil\u00adi\u00adty to bind to it devel\u00adops as it matures and is there\u00adfore con\u00adsid\u00adered a bio\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal mark\u00ader of matu\u00adri\u00adty. In PICSI, sperm are placed in a spe\u00adcial cul\u00adture dish con\u00adtain\u00ading hyaluron\u00adic acid. Sperm that bind to it can then be specif\u00adi\u00adcal\u00adly select\u00aded for ICSI. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The method is there\u00adfore based on a bio\u00adlog\u00adi\u00adcal mech\u00ada\u00adnism that also plays a role in nat\u00adur\u00adal fer\u00adtil\u00adiza\u00adtion. How\u00adev\u00ader, this does not mean that PICSI gen\u00ader\u00adal\u00adly leads to bet\u00adter treat\u00adment out\u00adcomes. Large stud\u00adies have so far shown no clear advan\u00adtage over con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal ICSI in terms of preg\u00adnan\u00adcy or live birth rates. There are, how\u00adev\u00ader, indi\u00adca\u00adtions of a low\u00ader mis\u00adcar\u00adriage rate; whether cer\u00adtain patient groups ben\u00ade\u00adfit in par\u00adtic\u00adu\u00adlar has not yet been con\u00adclu\u00adsive\u00adly clar\u00adi\u00adfied. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

For this rea\u00adson, we do not use PICSI rou\u00adtine\u00adly, but assess indi\u00advid\u00adu\u00adal\u00adly whether the addi\u00adtion\u00adal sperm selec\u00adtion may be appro\u00adpri\u00adate based on your find\u00adings and pre\u00advi\u00adous treat\u00adments.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When is PICSI use\u00adful?<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

PICSI is not rou\u00adtine\u00adly rec\u00adom\u00admend\u00aded for every ICSI treat\u00adment. For most patients, no clear advan\u00adtage over con\u00adven\u00adtion\u00adal ICSI has yet been demon\u00adstrat\u00aded in terms of preg\u00adnan\u00adcy or live birth rates. How\u00adev\u00ader, stud\u00adies indi\u00adcate a low\u00ader mis\u00adcar\u00adriage rate, and in cer\u00adtain abnor\u00admal\u00adi\u00adties of sperm qual\u00adi\u00adty<\/a>, addi\u00adtion\u00adal sperm selec\u00adtion may be con\u00adsid\u00adered on an indi\u00advid\u00adual basis. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

PICSI may be con\u00adsid\u00adered, for exam\u00adple, in cas\u00ades of:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
