What is sperm donation?
Sperm donation is a form of fertility treatment in which donor sperm is used. It is used when the partner has no sperm or not enough functional sperm, or when women without a partner or lesbian couples wish to have a child. Sperm donation can be used as part of insemination (IUI) or IVF/ICSI treatment. The donor sperm comes from licensed sperm banks and is selected according to defined medical and genetic criteria.
-
Donor insemination
If the conditions for pregnancy are good for the woman and at least one fallopian tube is open, insemination with donor sperm can be a simple and gentle option. The prepared donor sperm is placed directly into the uterus at the appropriate time.

IVF/ICSI treatment
If additional fertility factors play a role—for example blocked fallopian tubes, endometriosis, a reduced ovarian reserve, or older age—IVF or ICSI may be advisable. The eggs are fertilized with the donor sperm in the laboratory.

Special aspects of sperm donation
Sperm donation is medically established and clearly regulated by law. At the same time, it is a very personal decision that often raises questions about genetic origin and how to inform the child later on.
- Professional societies recommend an open, age-appropriate approach to the child’s conception story.
- Children conceived through sperm donation have a legally regulated right to information about the identity of the sperm donor from the age of 16.
- In medically supervised sperm donation, the sperm donor does not become the child’s legal father and is not liable for child support.
- Questions about genetic and social parenthood can be discussed calmly even before treatment begins.
We deliberately take plenty of time for your questions and for the special medical, legal, and personal aspects of treatment with sperm donation. Our aim is not only to provide you with excellent medical care, but also to give you space to discuss your thoughts, wishes, and any uncertainties in peace. We will discuss the options for specialized psychosocial counseling with you and support you in finding a path that feels right and good for you.
Medical safety & responsible support
Treatment with donor sperm is an established method in reproductive medicine and, for many different family constellations, a way to achieve pregnancy.
We work with carefully selected, licensed sperm banks in Germany and abroad, where donors are examined according to defined medical, genetic, and quality criteria.
Which treatment is appropriate for you depends on your personal and medical situation. Depending on age, ovarian reserve, cycle, fallopian tube function, and other findings, insemination or IVF/ICSI may be considered. Together, we choose the path that fits your circumstances and wishes. However, sperm donation is about more than medical treatment alone. Questions about selecting a donor, genetic origin, how to inform the child later, and your own understanding of parenthood can be very personal. We deliberately take time for this and support you with openness, appreciation, and without pressure. In addition, we recommend specialized psychosocial counseling for so-called gamete donation.
Supportive counseling & treatments
Sperm donation involves medical, legal, and emotional aspects alike. In accompanying psychosocial counseling, topics discussed with you include an open approach to the conception story, social and biological parenthood, and possible issues that may arise at different stages of the child’s life. Individual questions—for example for solo mothers or same-sex couples—also have space here. This creates clarity and strengthens your decision on a stable foundation.
Before insemination, the cycle can be monitored in a targeted way or gently supported hormonally to determine the optimal time for treatment. Through individual adjustments, we increase the chance of successful treatment. Therapy is always designed to be as gentle as possible.
If additional factors such as impaired fallopian tube function or reduced ovarian reserve are present, IVF or ICSI with donor sperm may be medically advisable. Fertilization takes place in the laboratory under controlled conditions. Especially in more complex starting situations, this option offers a higher likelihood of pregnancy.
If, as part of IVF or ICSI, more embryos develop than can be transferred in that cycle, suitable embryos can be frozen for later treatments. This allows another embryo transfer at a later time without the need for renewed stimulation and egg retrieval.
Process of sperm donation for fertility treatment
At our fertility center Die Kinderwunschärztin in Munich, we guide you in a structured and empathetic way through all steps of treatment with sperm donation. From medical preparation and selecting a suitable sperm bank through to performing insemination or IVF, each step follows an individually coordinated treatment plan and is provided under personal medical care.
-
Initial consultation & medical planning
Make an appointmentAt the beginning, we take time to get to know your personal situation, your wishes, and your previous experiences in detail.
We discuss your medical history, carry out the necessary examinations, and plan the next diagnostic and medical steps together.
-
Legal and psychosocial counseling
In addition to medical aspects, sperm donation also involves legal and personal questions.
That is why we discuss these topics with you early on and support you in organizing specialized psychosocial and—depending on your family constellation—legal counseling. This allows important questions to be clarified calmly before treatment begins.
-
Selecting the donor
We then support you in choosing a suitable sperm bank and an appropriate donor.
You will have access to verified donor profiles and can take your time to decide which donor is suitable for you. If you have any questions, we are always here for you.
-
Planning the treatment
Once the medical prerequisites have been clarified and you have selected a donor that is right for you, we plan the appropriate treatment together.
Depending on your situation, this may be insemination in a natural or supported cycle, or IVF/ICSI treatment.
-
Carrying out the treatment
Treatment is carried out according to an individually coordinated plan. During insemination, the prepared donor sperm is placed into the uterus at the appropriate time.

-
Pregnancy test (approx. 14 days later)
About two weeks after insemination, or about 10 days after embryo transfer, the pregnancy test is performed.
We discuss the result together and calmly plan the next steps with you.

What Our Patients Say
Costs of sperm donation
The costs depend on which treatment is medically appropriate for you. In addition to medical consultation and diagnostics, there are costs for the donor sperm and its shipping, as well as for the fertility treatment itself. Depending on the situation, cycle monitoring, medication, or additional laboratory services may be added.
Before treatment begins, you will receive a transparent overview of the expected costs.
Insemination with donor sperm including medical and organizational preparation as well as treatment performance.
The required appointments for cycle monitoring and hormone checks are not included.
Ultrasound and hormone checks to determine the optimal time for insemination. Usually 1–3 appointments are needed.
Make an appointmentWith IVF, the ovaries are stimulated, the eggs are retrieved, and then combined with the donor sperm in the laboratory. After successful fertilization, embryo transfer takes place.
The costs of IVF treatment include medical care, egg retrieval, fertilization in the laboratory, and embryo transfer. Further costs are incurred for the required medication and anesthesia. Depending on the individual situation, additional services such as cryopreservation may be added.
With ICSI, a single sperm cell is injected directly into the egg. ICSI may be advisable, for example, if a previous IVF treatment did not result in fertilization.
The treatment process is identical to IVF treatment. In the laboratory, however, during intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), a single sperm cell is selected under the microscope and injected directly into the egg.
No fixed or flat-rate prices: We bill on the basis of the official scale of fees for doctors (GOÄ). According to the GOÄ, we are not allowed to quote fixed or flat-rate prices for medical services. The prices mentioned are intended to provide orientation and are typical for the treatments mentioned.
Possible VAT liability: Medical services may be subject to VAT (currently 19%). This applies if, after diagnostics have been carried out, no medical indication or confirmed diagnosis is present and it is therefore not a medical treatment in the strict sense. This can be the case in particular with social freezing treatments, but also with the treatment of single moms and same-sex couples.
We would be happy to provide you with detailed cost information for the planned treatment in advance. This allows you to clarify cost coverage with your private health insurance (PKV) as best as possible beforehand. Statutory health insurance (GKV) does not cover costs at our center.
Frequently asked questions about sperm donation
How does the selection of a sperm donor work?
We work with licensed sperm banks in Germany and abroad and support you with the selection. You will receive access to verified donor profiles with information, for example, on appearance, medical history, and other personal characteristics. You can take your time to decide which donor is right for you.
Is sperm donation anonymous in Germany?
With medically supervised sperm donation, the donor’s data is documented in the sperm donor register. This gives the child the opportunity later to learn about their genetic origin. Until the age of 16, the legal guardians can request information; from the age of 16, the child can do so themselves.
The sperm donor does not assume a legal parental role and is not liable for child support.
What are the prerequisites for insemination?
For insemination, at least one fallopian tube should be open. We also take into account age, ovarian reserve, the cycle, possible pre-existing conditions, and other medical factors. If the chances of pregnancy with insemination are low, IVF/ICSI may be more appropriate. We discuss this with you depending on your situation.
How many attempts are typical with sperm donation?
This cannot be defined across the board. With insemination, several cycles are often necessary because the chance of pregnancy per attempt is limited. Typically, several insemination cycles are carried out first before the next steps are reassessed. With IVF/ICSI, the probability of success per cycle is generally higher, but it also involves greater medical effort. We discuss the optimal treatment strategy with you individually.
Is psychosocial counseling mandatory?
Psychosocial counseling is strongly recommended by us and by professional societies, but it is not mandatory. Counseling provides space to calmly discuss questions about genetic origin, how to inform the child later, and your own understanding of parenthood. We work with experienced counseling centers and contacts and, if you wish, can connect you with the right person.
Do I also need legal counseling?
Depending on your family constellation, legal questions can play an important role. We address these topics with you early on and, if needed, connect you with experienced lawyers from our network.
How long does the entire process take from consultation to treatment?
After the initial consultation, we first clarify the medical prerequisites and plan the necessary examinations. In parallel, the donor can be selected. Once all prerequisites are met and the sperm sample is available, treatment can often begin within a few weeks or with one of the next cycles.
Some couples also like to seek advice in advance and plan treatment for a later time.
Is there an age limit for treatment with sperm donation?
There is no general legal age limit. However, decisive factors include age, ovarian reserve, health prerequisites, and the individual likelihood of pregnancy. We discuss these factors with you openly and realistically and plan treatment accordingly.
Is sperm donation also possible for single women?
Yes. We also treat women without a partner with donor sperm. We discuss which medical and organizational steps are necessary individually during the initial consultation.
Can lesbian couples be treated with donor sperm at our center?
Yes. We support lesbian couples in starting a family with donor sperm and plan treatment individually—depending on the medical situation, as insemination or IVF/ICSI.
Can the same donor be used later for a sibling?
Depending on the sperm bank, it may be possible to reserve additional samples from the same donor. If it is important to you to have a genetic sibling with the same donor, we recommend taking this into account early when selecting and reserving.
