Desire for Children as a Challenging Time for Many Couples

An unfulfilled desire for children affects not only the body but the entire life. Many couples experience this phase as emotionally challenging, sometimes even as a crisis. Hope, waiting, and disappointment alternate, while everyday life seemingly continues unchanged.

However, involuntary childlessness is not uncommon – and not a personal failure. Neither for the woman nor for the man. Physical causes, hormonal factors, or medical correlations often elude direct influence. Nevertheless, feelings of guilt, pressure, and the sense of losing control over an important area of life often arise.

As fertility specialists with many years of experience in fertility treatment, it is important for us to start precisely here: with understanding, clarity, and support that focuses on you as a couple – not just individual values or findings.

In our fertility center, you will be accompanied by a dedicated doctor throughout the entire treatment. We take the time to understand your individual situation, explain medical correlations clearly, and develop a clear, realistic treatment plan together with you.

Typical Challenges & Questions from Couples

Couples with an unfulfilled desire for children often come to us with similar thoughts and concerns. Many of these questions remain unanswered in their private environment – or are overshadowed by well-intentioned but unhelpful advice.

Frequent questions include, for example:

  • Why is pregnancy not happening despite regular attempts?
  • Are there physical causes in the woman, the man, or both partners?
  • How long does it normally take to get pregnant?
  • How common is unfulfilled desire for children among couples?
  • When should one seek medical help for an unfulfilled desire for children?
  • Which examinations are useful for an unfulfilled desire for children?
  • How do we, as a couple, deal with the emotional burden?

Taking these questions seriously is the first step. In a protected setting, our doctors create space for your concerns, categorize information, and help you regain clarity – medically sound and humanly empathetic.

Common causes of an unfulfilled wish to have a child

In many cases, several factors come together – in the woman, in the man, or in both partners. Common reasons for involuntary childlessness are:

  • Hormonal causes, such as cycle disorders or reduced ovarian reserve
  • Organic changes in the woman, e.g., in fallopian tubes or uterus
  • Reduced fertility in men, e.g., due to reduced sperm count or motility
  • Age of the woman and age of the man
  • Pre-existing conditions such as endometriosis or PCOS / PMOS
  • Previous interventions that can affect fertility
  • Lifestyle factors, such as severe overweight or underweight, smoking, or chronic stress
  • Unclear causes, where no clear medical reason is found despite diagnostics

Important: Involuntary childlessness is not a matter of guilt or wrong behavior. In most cases, if the desire for children is not immediately fulfilled, it is not because couples are “doing something wrong.”

Recommended Steps – A Structured Path for Unfulfilled Desire for Children

A clear process can help reduce uncertainty and regain clarity. Therefore, in the clarification and treatment of an unfulfilled desire for children, we follow a structured but individually adapted approach.

Not every examination and not every treatment is suitable for every couple. Our goal is not to carry out as many measures as possible, but to recommend precisely the diagnostics and therapy that medically truly fit your situation.

  1. Consultation

In a personal conversation, we take time for your story, your questions, and your expectations. A detailed medical history and an initial ultrasound form the basis for understanding your individual situation and planning the next steps together.

    Make an appointment
  2. Examination

Building on this, targeted diagnostics are carried out, for example, through hormone analyses, ultrasound examinations, or a spermiogram. Depending on the situation, further examinations may be useful, such as checking fallopian tube patency.

  3. Individual Treatment Plan

Together, we discuss all results clearly and transparently. From this, we develop a treatment plan that is medically sound and suits your personal life situation and your wishes.

  4. Accompanying Support

Throughout the entire process, you will be accompanied by a dedicated doctor. You will have a personal contact person who knows your situation, answers questions, and guides you step by step through the treatment.

Special Situations and Challenges in the Desire for Children

An unfulfilled desire for children manifests very differently in couples. Often there are experiences or life situations that additionally burden this time emotionally and raise new questions. Especially in such situations, individual and empathetic support is particularly important.

Unfulfilled Desire for Children After Miscarriage

After miscarriages, the desire for another pregnancy is often accompanied by mixed feelings. Hope and fear are close together, as is the worry that what has been experienced could repeat itself. In this situation, it takes time to calmly process one’s own feelings and hopes.

Unfulfilled Desire for a Second Child

When the desire for another child remains unfulfilled, many couples find this particularly difficult to comprehend. After an already experienced pregnancy, additional questions often arise: Why isn’t it working this time? Have physical conditions changed? This situation should also be medically classified and carefully clarified.

Repeated Unsuccessful Attempts

Several unsuccessful fertility treatments can lead to exhaustion, doubt, and increasing uncertainty. Many couples wonder if and how to proceed. Here it is important to carefully classify previous treatments and jointly explore new perspectives.

Differing Burdens in the Partnership

An unfulfilled desire for children affects both partners – physical, emotional, and everyday burdens can be experienced differently. Recognizing these differences and addressing them openly can be relieving and strengthen the partnership.

Each of these situations requires an individual perspective. Our goal is to understand your personal story and, based on that, discuss the next meaningful steps together.

Treatment Options for Unfulfilled Desire for Children

Which treatment is appropriate always depends on the individual situation of the couple. Factors such as age, medical and hormonal conditions, previous examinations, and personal wishes play an important role.

Therefore, we explain all options to you clearly and transparently. Together, we weigh the benefits, success rates, and burdens of the individual steps. This allows you to make a decision that is medically sound and feels right for you at the same time.

The key is to find a path together that is medically sound and also fits your life.

Hormonal Stimulation

For some couples, targeted hormonal support can already help. Mild stimulation regulates the cycle or supports ovulation, especially if it is irregular or absent. The goal is to improve the chances of a natural pregnancy without unnecessarily burdening the body.

Insemination (IUI)

Insemination can be an option if the conditions for a natural pregnancy are generally met, but it is still not possible to conceive. Prepared sperm are introduced directly into the uterus at the optimal time. The treatment is gentle and is often combined with mild hormonal stimulation.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF/ICSI)

In in vitro fertilization (IVF) and intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI), eggs are fertilized in the laboratory after hormonal stimulation and then transferred to the uterus. These procedures are particularly suitable if other measures have not been successful or if specific medical conditions exist. Which method is appropriate is decided individually and discussed with you in detail.

Holistic Support

In addition to medical treatments, other aspects play an important role. These include careful diagnostics, a realistic assessment of success rates, and – if appropriate – additional support, for example, through discussions in stressful situations.

This creates support that considers not only the medical side but also what personally concerns you.

We clarify step by step which fertility treatment is suitable for you as a couple. It is important to us that you are well informed and can make decisions that feel right for you.

Professional Help for Unfulfilled Desire for Children

An unfulfilled desire for children raises many questions – medical as well as personal. Without professional guidance, much remains unclear, uncertainty increases, and decisions are difficult. Professional support can help provide guidance and broaden perspectives again.

In our fertility center, we support couples with an unfulfilled desire for children, with medical experience, clear structure, and a holistic understanding of their situation. We consider not only individual findings but the interplay of physical conditions, life circumstances, and personal expectations.

An important component of our work is continuity: you will be accompanied by a dedicated medical contact person throughout the entire process. This builds trust, reliability, and a framework in which questions can be asked openly and decisions can be made at your own pace.

Our goal is to provide you with expert support while also giving you space for guidance – regardless of where you are on your fertility journey.

Psychological Burden of Unfulfilled Desire for Children

An unfulfilled desire for children is often associated with psychological burdens. Feelings such as sadness, fear, anger, or helplessness are completely normal in this situation. Many couples experience phases of increased tension or withdraw from their social environment.

In addition to the physical aspects, the emotional burden also plays an important role. Open conversations, relief, and the knowledge that you are not alone with your feelings can help regain more stability.

In our practice, we consciously address these topics and help you find suitable contact points or therapeutic support if you desire additional assistance. This creates space to better classify the situation and make clearer decisions – regardless of what your further path looks like.

We flew from overseas to work with Dr Mann and her team. Everyone was so kind, empathetic and extremely helpful. Everyone spoke English and made us feel very welcome. We could not have asked for better care than what we received from Dr Mann and her team. Bonus, the offices are beautiful.

After visiting two other fertility clinics (one of which I left in tears), I had almost lost hope of finding a place where I would truly feel heard. Then I met Dr. Sarah Comploj, and everything changed. From the very first consultation, I felt genuinely listened to and treated as an individual. Unlike my previous experiences, where I was quickly told I needed IVF without anyone really taking the time to understand my situation or carefully review my test results, here I felt that my case truly mattered. Every step was explained thoughtfully, and my concerns were taken seriously. What stood out the most was that I never felt like just another patient or that the focus was on money. Instead, I felt that the entire team was committed to helping me achieve my dream in the most appropriate and personal way possible. Today, I am holding my one-month-old baby in my arms, and I will forever be grateful for the care, compassion, and expertise I received here. I can only highly recommend this clinic and Dr. Comploj 🩷

Every appointment I’ve had over the last few months has been consistently informative, professional, and conducted in a personal manner. The treatment plan was explained in detail and any concerns or questions always answered. She also speaks perfect English if required. I’m impressed with how well organised the clinic is and how quickly results are processed, and last-minute appointments made available. For anyone who is going through the struggle of infertility it’s a difficult and vulnerable time, but I always felt so reassured and in good hands with Dr Mann.

I'm very grateful for my experience, the staff from reception to the doctors were very kind. You can feel accompanied during the treatment. Also, overall I had a successful treatment, especially considering my age, it's a costly treatment but it's worth it. So I'm very happy for the result, my doctor was Sara Comploj.

From the very beginning, dr Mann was attentive, knowledgeable, and truly invested in helping me achieve the best possible outcome. She took the time to understand my goals and tailored my treatment plan to make sure I had the best chance of success. Thanks to her care and expertise, I was able to maximise my results and reach my goals. I always felt supported, informed, and in the best hands. Since my doctor was busy and couldn't do the procedure herself, I had an appointment with Sarah to have my fallopian tubes checked. I was very nervous before the procedure, but it turned out to be for nothing! Sarah described and explained every step of the procedure and was extremely friendly.

Our multiple years-long Kinderwunsch journey was spent under the care of Dr. Mann and her Kinderwunsch practice team. Dr. Mann is not only a highly competent expert in her field, she's also empathetic and kind. She treated each appointment with a sense of being genuinely invested — listening to concerns or questions, planning for my unique treatment needs, and explaining processes or procedures without rushing (because she knows it's likely your first time going through something ... even though it might be her 40000th time). Her practice is busy and it's because she's the best. The practice team is cheerful and helpful. The waiting area is comfortable with pleasant music, flowers, and they even laid out gingerbread during Christmas time. They have a lab on-site so results are often same-day. I particularly found the technology they use to share results via email quickly so helpful. And I always felt at ease speaking in my native language and not pressured to try to keep up with unfamiliar German terminology. I'm forever grateful to have found Dr. Mann. We plan to visit soon with our new plus-one :) - RB & JB

Dr.Albrecht is really good and friendly. She is best at her own way. But reception staff is very very very worst and disappointing. They themselves book an appointment and say it’s not booked. Luckily in Doctorlib my appointment was visible. Staff is very very rude. And they respond very rudely. I can give 0 rating for Staff at reception.

We had an absolutely wonderful experience with Dr. Mann. Her positive energy and competence was so reassuring and much appreciated during the potentially stressful time of trying to have a baby. I really loved how we could communicate in either English or German over complicated and sensitive reproductive matters. She took the time to answer all of our questions and offered us a wealth of information regarding the treatments. And her staff brought the same good vibes and Expertise to the practice. Some of the best and painless blood draws I’ve ever had, and they were always very responsive through emails as well as telephone communication. Online appointment system was also great. Video consults super convenient. The setting of the practice itself is an oasis of peace and calmness. As soon as I stepped through the doors I felt relaxed with the music, green plant wall, and well designed and decorated space. Technology and quality of equipment is very good. Yes, sometimes the waiting time had been 30+ minutes, but because the patient care is so excellent, I’ll be back for future treatments as needed, and would highly recommend this practice and team to anyone.

I have only the best words to describe my experience at the clinic. I personally worked with Dr. Albrecht and she was amazing. Every appointment was done on time, informative and clear on what the next steps are. She offered details and support with my every question. Where I wasn’t sure of my German we swapped to English to make sure I understood everything. The clinic is run in a very efficient way, organized, planned and as a process oriented person I loved it!

Frequently Asked Questions About Unfulfilled Desire for Children

When should one see a doctor for an unfulfilled desire for children?

If pregnancy does not occur after about twelve months despite regular unprotected intercourse, we recommend a medical evaluation. For women over 35, it is advisable to seek medical advice after six months, as fertility decreases with age. Cycle disorders, known pre-existing conditions, endometriosis, or repeated miscarriages can also be reasons to schedule an appointment at a fertility center earlier.

How common is unfulfilled desire for children among couples?

An unfulfilled desire for children is more common than many couples suspect. Depending on the study, about one in six to eight couples is temporarily affected by involuntary childlessness. So you are by no means alone in this situation – even if it is often perceived differently in your personal environment.

What can cause involuntary childlessness?

The reasons are diverse and can lie with the woman, the man, or both partners. Hormonal disorders, organic changes, or limitations in sperm quality can play a role. Age also significantly influences fertility. In many cases, possible causes can be clarified through targeted diagnostics.

What role does the psyche play in the desire for children?

Stress, pressure, or emotional burden are generally not the cause of an unfulfilled desire for children. However, they can influence general well-being, the cycle, and hormonal processes, and additionally complicate the fertility journey. At the same time, an unfulfilled desire for children itself is a significant psychological burden for many couples. Therefore, we consider both the medical and emotional aspects of your situation and include both in our consultation.

What can couples do themselves to improve their chances?

A healthy lifestyle can support fertility. This includes a balanced body weight, abstinence from smoking, regular exercise, a balanced diet, and conscious stress management. At the same time: many causes of an unfulfilled desire for children cannot be remedied by this. A medical evaluation helps to realistically assess the individual situation and, if necessary, treat it specifically.

At the same time, it is helpful to be well informed, to talk openly with each other, and to make decisions without unnecessary pressure.

Which factors influence fertility?

Crucial factors are primarily age, hormonal conditions, and egg and sperm quality. Organic changes, such as in the fallopian tubes or uterus, can also play a role.

Additionally, lifestyle factors such as smoking, severe overweight or underweight, or persistent stress can have an influence.
