Fertility testing – evidence-based and medically supervised
Various examinations can help medically classify important aspects of female fertility. Depending on the question, hormone tests, assessment of ovarian reserve (AMH) or fallopian tube diagnostics (HyCoSy) may be considered. This provides an initial, well-founded assessment of your hormonal situation and ovarian reserve, and together we can consider whether further diagnostic steps are advisable.
At the private center Die Kinderwunschärztin in Munich, we offer you—tailored to your individual situation—various options for assessing fertility:
-
At-Home Fertility Test
This test is suitable if you would like an initial medical insight into your ovarian reserve and hormonal situation—regardless of whether you currently have a specific desire to have children.
In addition to the AMH level as an important marker of ovarian reserve, other fertility-relevant hormones such as FSH, LH, estradiol, prolactin, testosterone and TSH are measured. This allows hormonal relationships and possible abnormalities to be assessed more accurately.
Blood sampling is conveniently done from home. Your results are reviewed by a specialist physician and prepared in an easy-to-understand way.

On-site fertility test in Munich
This test is suitable if you would like a more comprehensive assessment of your ovarian reserve and hormonal situation and prefer to have the blood draw directly at our fertility center.
The assessment also includes AMH and other fertility-relevant hormones. Your results are interpreted by a specialist physician and prepared in an easy-to-understand way.

AMH Baseline Check
The AMH baseline check is suitable if you would like an initial insight into your ovarian reserve—even without a current desire to have children.
The AMH level provides indications of how your ovarian reserve should be interpreted in relation to your age. However, it cannot predict how long pregnancy will still be possible or how high your current likelihood of a natural pregnancy is.
You can collect the blood sample conveniently at home with a small finger prick. Your results are then reviewed by a specialist physician and prepared in an easy-to-understand way.

Fallopian Tube Diagnostics (HyCoSy)
A fallopian tube patency test (HyCoSy or HyFoSy) can be used to examine whether your fallopian tubes are open. This can be particularly important in cases of a longer period of unfulfilled desire to have children. Checking the fallopian tubes may also be advisable after inflammation or chlamydia infections, in cases of endometriosis, after abdominal or pelvic surgery, or after a previous ectopic pregnancy.

Who a fertility test is suitable for
Medical interpretation of the results
Gold standard
The results of fertility diagnostics provide important medical indications, but should always be considered in the context of your age, your cycle, your medical history and your personal situation. We will discuss your findings together and clarify whether further examinations or steps are advisable.
Possible next steps after the fertility test
An ultrasound examination of the ovaries complements hormonal fertility diagnostics. Among other things, the number of small antral follicles (AFC) and possible abnormalities such as cysts can be assessed. In addition to the AMH level, the AFC provides important indications of ovarian reserve.
Depending on the timing within the cycle, the ultrasound can also assess the development of a maturing follicle..
An advanced hormone analysis can be advisable if abnormalities are found in the fertility test or if certain questions need to be clarified in more detail. Individual hormone levels can be specifically added or checked at certain times during the cycle.
This allows hormonal abnormalities to be classified more precisely and, if necessary, further diagnostic or therapeutic steps to be planned.
During cycle monitoring, we follow your cycle using ultrasound examinations and, if needed, additional hormone measurements. This allows us to assess follicle maturation and ovulation and then also evaluate the second half of the cycle (luteal phase) in terms of its length and hormonal situation. This makes it possible to identify potential cycle disorders more specifically.
If you do not currently have a desire to have children but would like to postpone your family planning to a later time, social freezing may be an option. After hormonal stimulation, eggs are retrieved and frozen for later use.
Because age at the time of freezing plays an important role in later chances of success, early consultation can be advisable. Social freezing can provide additional time flexibility for family planning, but it cannot guarantee a later pregnancy.

Frequently asked questions about the fertility test
Can a gynecologist tell whether I can get pregnant?
No, a single examination cannot predict whether or when a woman will become pregnant. However, a fertility test can examine important aspects—for example, ovarian reserve and hormonal status. Depending on the question, ultrasound, cycle monitoring or an examination of the fallopian tubes can provide additional information.
How does a fertility test differ from ovulation tests from a drugstore or pharmacy?
Ovulation tests usually measure the rise of the hormone LH in urine and can therefore indicate an upcoming ovulation and the fertile days. However, they assess neither ovarian reserve nor overall hormonal status.
With a medically supervised fertility test, several hormones are measured in the blood. This includes the AMH level as an important marker of ovarian reserve. This allows various hormonal factors to be medically interpreted.
When is the best time to take the test?
The AMH baseline check can generally be performed regardless of the cycle day.
For the more comprehensive fertility test, we recommend blood sampling at the beginning of the cycle, ideally between cycle days 1 and 5, as FSH, LH and estradiol in particular depend on the timing within the cycle.
How reliable is a fertility test for assessing fertility?
A fertility test provides important information about ovarian reserve and hormonal status. However, it cannot predict whether or when pregnancy will occur.
The results can show, among other things,
- how your ovarian reserve should be interpreted in relation to your age,
- whether there are indications of hormonal abnormalities or cycle disorders,
- whether there are indications of an ovarian reserve that is unusually low for your age or reduced ovarian function,
- whether there are hormonal abnormalities that should be investigated further, for example in connection with PCOS or a thyroid disorder,
- how your ovarian reserve should be interpreted with regard to social freezing, and
- whether further examinations might be advisable.
The test cannot provide information about individual egg quality or the exact timing of menopause.
Where is the blood sample taken?
Depending on the test you choose, you can collect the blood sample conveniently at home with a small finger prick or come to our private center at Herzogspitalstraße 5, 80331 Munich, near Karlsplatz/Stachus, for the blood draw.
Is the at-home test just as reliable as a test on site at the fertility center?
With the at-home fertility test, the sample is also analyzed in our laboratory and evaluated by a specialist physician. A prerequisite for reliable analysis is correct sample collection and sufficient sample quality. If a sample cannot be evaluated adequately, we will inform you about the next steps.
How much does the fertility test cost and how is payment made?
The costs for a fertility test are usually around 87 euros for the AMH baseline check, 199 euros for the at-home test, and 207 euros for the on-site test.
Billing is based on the German Medical Fee Schedule (GOÄ). Therefore, the actual costs may vary slightly in individual cases. Payment can be made online, for example by credit card.
Are the costs covered by health insurance?
For a preventive examination without a medical indication, the costs are generally not covered by statutory health insurance. With private health insurance, possible reimbursement depends on the respective plan and the medical indication. If needed, we recommend clarifying coverage with your insurer in advance.
What happens if my fertility test shows abnormal results?
Abnormal laboratory values should always be considered in the context of your age, your cycle and your personal situation and do not automatically mean that your fertility is reduced.
Your results are therefore reviewed by one of our physicians before they are sent. If findings are clearly abnormal or require explanation, we will contact you personally to discuss the results with you and clarify together whether further examinations are advisable. If you have questions about your results, you are of course also welcome to arrange a personal appointment by phone or video with one of our physicians.
